UYIR (meaning “Life”) is a not-for-profit road safety movement established in Coimbatore with the vision of creating an accident-free society through awareness, education, engineering interventions, enforcement support, technology adoption, stakeholder collaboration, and citizen participation.
Registered as a charitable trust on 07 March 2018, UYIR was founded by industrialists, medical professionals, educationists, and socially conscious citizens who recognized the urgent need to address the growing burden of road traffic injuries and fatalities. UYIR works closely with government agencies, police department, educational institutions, industries, healthcare providers, volunteers, and communities to foster a culture of responsible road usage and safe mobility. Â
Today, UYIR has emerged as one of India’s most visible community-driven road safety movements, implementing school and college programs, awareness campaigns, road safety infrastructure projects, volunteer networks, technology-enabled initiatives, and policy advocacy efforts. Â

Back in 2018 UYIR was founded by industrialists, medical professionals, educationists and
socially conscious citizens to prevent road accidents in Coimbatore.
2018
UYIR Trust was established with a focus on making Coimbatore an accident-free city, and collaboration discussions were initiated with educational institutions, the Coimbatore City Police, and the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation to support this mission.
2019 - 2020
Launched Road Safety Awareness programs for 15 schools and 5 colleges, Road safety movements, and launch of citizen-focused engagement models.
2020 - 2022
UYIR Clubs were established in 10 colleges and expanded further, while the Kutty Cops initiative was launched and grew across Coimbatore city. Educational content was developed, social media outreach was strengthened, and technology-enabled awareness programs were introduced.
2022 -2023
The Kutty Cops initiative received state-level recognition and launch support from the Government of Tamil Nadu, expanded into hundreds of schools, across the entire Coimbatore city. A major milestone was achieved with 4.25 lakh children taking the Road Safety Pledge administered by the Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, earning recognition from the World Book of Records.
2023 -2024
Major road safety awareness drives were conducted through industry partnerships, volunteer-led campaigns, and Driver Refresher Training initiatives that trained about 300 drivers. The CCP - UYIR Helmet Awareness Campaigns also counselled individuals to promote safer road user behaviour.
2024 - 2025

2025 - 2026
Kutty Cops expanded to over 2,000 schools across Coimbatore district, alongside the launch of the UYIR Road Safety Curriculum for 2.84 lakh students (Grades 3–8) and training of 812 teachers. The Hon'ble Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu launched the *Naan UYIR Kavalan* Mega Citizen Road Safety Pledge and Community Road Safety Campaigns, with 7.20 lakh people across Coimbatore taking the Road Safety Pledge. UYIR also organised a National-Level Road Safety Hackathon, attracting over 10,000 applicants, 3,000+ project submissions, 144 finalists, and 24 winning teams receiving prizes worth ₹6.30 lakh. Major public engagement initiatives included a Road Safety Human Chain with over 10,000 students (September 2025) and a Run & Walk Marathon with more than 5,000 participants (October 2025).
Every road crash is preventable. UYIR works with schools, colleges, communities, government agencies, and volunteers to promote responsible road behaviour and create safer roads for everyone. Through awareness, education, innovation, and community participation, we strive to make Road Safety a daily habit rather than an occasional campaign.
